Plot

After Lex Luthor’s arrest and the impeachment of his presidency, Superman and Batman’s success saving the world from the kryptonite meteor, it was weeks before a spaceship crashed into Gotham City Harbor. Batman is investigating the sunken craft when a young girl appears out of the water and causes damage to Batman’s boat. She is completely naked and does not know any Earth languages or customs. She meets three longshoremen on the shore. One of them tries to push her. Two of them attack her in self-defence. The third gives her his coat so she can cover herself. The girl moves into the city and accidentally unleashes her powerful Kryptonian abilities (with Batman following). Superman then arrives to repair the damage, and Batman exposes her to a piece of Kryptonite that weakens her mental faculties.

Superman helps to discover that the girl is Kara Zor El, the niece of Lara and Jor-El. This makes her Superman’s biological second cousin. Kara is physically younger than her younger cousin and has been suspended animation since her rocket crashed off course. Superman meets Kara and teaches her English. Batman is still suspicious of Kara’s potential enemy. Kara says that she will never hurt her baby cousin. Lyla, Wonder Woman, and Batman tip-off Kara and Clark Kent, Superman’s alter egos, in a park. They suggest that they train Kara at Themyscira, where she can control her powers. Superman is reluctant to allow them to train Kara but prefers to keep an eye on her. Wonder Woman and Batman advise Superman not to take Kara into their care, criticizing him for his neglect of her.

Darkseid, on the deserted planet Apokolips, learns about Kara’s existence and orders Granny Goodness that she be brought to Apokolips to serve as Granny Goodness’s leader for the Female Furies. Big Barda has become his servant, and the warrior Treasure is a failed candidate. Superman and Batman check on Kara on Themyscira two months later during a sparring match with Artemis. Kara and Lyla go for a swim while Lyla goes to the pool. A horde of Doomsday clones arrives from Apokolips. Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Amazonian Army fight them until Superman destroys them all with heat vision. Batman, however, discovers that the clones attacked Kara and Lyla. The last manifestation of her precognition shows that Darkseid is the culprit. He ordered a diversion to keep them all busy and gave Granny time to kidnap Kara. Darkseid begins brainwashing Kara once she is brought to Apokolips. Kara becomes cold-hearted, bloodthirsty and begins to serve Darkseid. He then makes Kara the captain of his honour Guard.

Big Barda agrees to assist Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in finding their way to Apokolips. Superman enters Darkseid’s palace, while Wonder Woman, Barda and Barda pass through the sewers to the fighting arena where Granny Goodness, the Female Furies, ambush them. Granny and her Furies are finally subjugated after a long fight. Batman separates himself from the rest and finds Darkseid’s Hell Spores, which are the source of Apokolips’ fire pits. Superman meets Darkseid and finds Kara brainwashed. Kara refuses to come back to Earth with him when he attempts to bring her. Darkseid then orders Kara to kill Superman. Darkseid watches them fight until Darkseid confronts Darkseid. He informs Darkseid that he activated the Hell Spores, which will destroy Apokolips. Darkseid is given an ultimatum by Darkseid: Free Kara and leave her alone. Batman will then deactivate the Spores. Superman defeats Kara. Barda, Wonder Woman, and Darkseid present Darkseid to Kara with the subdued Granny. The heroes then leave Apokolips and bring Kara back to Themyscira.

Clark returns to Earth, and their lives seem normal again. He takes Kara to Smallville to see his adoptive parents. Darkseid, who was expecting to kill Superman, tries to ambush them. He had promised to leave Kara alone but not Earth or Superman. Darkseid nearly kills Superman using his Omega Beams, but Kara manages to take the blast for her cousin. Superman tries to fight Darkseid but is quickly defeated and punched into the air. Kara fights Darkseid for the first time. Despite having been trained in Amazonian, Apokoliptan combat, she manages to keep her cool and defeats him. Superman arrives on Earth to reengage Darkseid. He pounds the villain with all his strength, but Superman does not give up and overwhelms Darkseid with his Omega Beams. Kara is able to recover and activate the Boom Tube behind Darkseid. Superman then blasts Darkseid through using his heat vision. Superman sees Darkseid returning from Apokolips, and Kara tells him that Kara changed the coordinates. Darkseid is now frozen in space.

Kara saves her cousin’s life and finds her place on Earth. She decides to use her powers for charity and takes the name of Supergirl. She is greeted with applause from Wonder Woman, the Amazons and finally Batman. Superman and Supergirl fly together to Metropolis.
