Movie Details
Plot
Bruce Wayne, in a flashback of his childhood, runs to the funeral of his parents. He is thrown into a cave by a vortex of bats, which lifts him to the surface. In the present, 18 months after the battle in Metropolis between Superman and General Zod, [N1] Superman is a controversial figure. Bruce, now a billionaire, has been operating in Gotham City for twenty years as vigilante Batman. He witnessed the chaos and despair of the battle firsthand, and he regards Superman as a threat to humanity.
Clark Kent, Superman’s civilian identity, learns about Batman’s method of justice and seeks to expose him through Daily Planet articles. Wayne discovers that Anatoli Knyazev, a Russian weapon trader, has been in touch with LexCorp mogul Lex Luthor. Luthor tries to convince Senator June Finch that he can import kryptonite found after Zod’s Terraforming attempt. This will be used to deter future Kryptonian or metahuman threats. Finch declines to allow Luthor access to Zod’s body, and Finch’s subordinate allows Luthor to make alternative plans.
Bruce goes to LexCorp’s gala to steal encrypted data. But Diana Prince, an antiquities dealer, takes it from Bruce. She returns it after she failed to gain access to the information. Bruce has dreams about a post-apocalyptic future where he leads rebellions against the evil Superman while decrypting his drive. Unidentified people awaken Bruce through a portal. They tell him that Lois Lane is the key and encourage him to search for the others. One of them is Diana, as seen in a World War I photo. Wayne informs Alfred Pennyworth that Wayne plans to steal and weaponize kryptonite if necessary to fight Superman.
Finch leads a congressional hearing to examine Superman’s actions towards Zod. Superman is killed when a bomb Luthor smuggled into the country explodes, killing all other people. Superman takes responsibility for failing to detect it in time, and he imposes exile. Batman also breaks into LexCorp to steal the kryptonite. He creates a powered exoskeleton and a kryptonite rocket launcher. Luthor, meanwhile, enters the Kryptonian vessel and gains access to its vast technology database.
Luthor seduces Superman by kidnapping Lois Kent and Martha Kent, Clark’s adoptive mothers. He pushes Lois away from the LexCorp building. Superman saves Lois and confronts Luthor. He reveals that he had manipulated Batman and him by creating distrust. Luthor demands that Martha be killed in return for Batman’s life. Superman attempts to explain the situation to Batman, but he attacks him and finally subdues him with kryptonite gas. Superman pleads for Batman to save Martha as he prepares to attack Batman with the spear. Batman pauses in confusion for Lois to arrive, explaining what Superman meant. He comes to terms with his guilt and promises to save Martha. Superman gains strength and confronts Luthor aboard the scout vessel.
Luthor’s backup plan is executed, unleashing a genetically engineered monster from DNA taken from Zod’s and his bodies. Superman discovers the creature’s vulnerability to kryptonite and retrieves the spear. The spear fatally impales the creature. Superman is killed by the creature in its final moments.
Batman confronts Luthor in prison after his arrest and warns him that he will always watch. Luthor boasts about how Superman’s demise has made the world more vulnerable to alien threats. Superman is remembered in Metropolis. Clark is also declared deceased, and Wayne, as well as Prince, attend his funeral at Smallville. Lois is presented with an envelope containing a Clark engagement ring. Bruce tells Diana that Superman has failed him in his life. He asks for her assistance to create a team of metahumans to protect the world, starting with those listed in Luthor’s files. The dirt on Clark’s coffin rises as they leave.
